Doomsday Prepper Oddities

Doomsday Preppers on National Geographic is a must see show.

Its so odd when these people devote their lives to preparing for something which may not even happen. They spend hours EVERY day to prepare and then fall down miserably in major survival categories. Take this couple for instance. They live on the east coast and have food and fuel for days, yet no real means to defend themselves. Watch the video, they admit it and then they basically say "ethically speaking we don't believe in defending ourselves".

Madness??

Range Time Fun

The target at 25 yards.

The wife and I decided to have a little fun at the local range. We each took one shot to see who would hit closer to the bulls eye. We didn't bet anything, although that could have been fun.

I used a Glock 17 9mm and she used a Sig 250 9mm. I hit in the "9" ring and was very happy with that, and then she took a shot. Now I sleep with one eye open.

Here is the wifes winning shot. Wasteland Approved.

Any of you guys ever have some friendly competition at the range?

Swine - A Post Apocalyptic Series

I stumbled (ow!) across this cool post apoc series this evening. Check out their videos and leave a comment below!

Synopsis

With civilization in ruins, man called upon his primal instincts to survive. Hunters and scavengers alike made their way in this savage land.

But when the Northern Warlords united, skulls cracked and spirits broke, as they conquered everything in their path.

Now, deep in the Outlands, a partisan movement, known as Vox Populi, stands their ground against an enemy bred for battle.

Bullets Crossing Borders

Woman in Texas struck by a bullet from Mexico.

Call it karma, bad luck or just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The bullet traveled over a mile before she was hit. Luckily she was not seriously injured.

Note to El Paso residents; get bulletproof vests!

EL PASO, Texas, Feb 21 (Reuters) - A woman pushing her child in a stroller in downtown El Paso, Texas, was struck by an assault rifle bullet fired from across the border in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on Tuesday, mayor John Cook said.

After Juarez police responded to a carjacking about half a mile from the border, a gunfight broke out between police and the carjackers, Cook said. A bullet -- a type used in assault weapons such as M16s -- penetrated and exited the woman's calf, he said.

The unidentified woman, 48, who was shopping, was treated at a hospital and released with minor injuries, and her child -- whose age Cook did not know -- was not hurt, he said. The mother, a Mexican citizen, is a legal U.S. resident living in El Paso, Cook said.

Legged Squad Support System (LS3)

Cool RoboDog, too bad its as loud as a lawnmower!

The idea here is to create an animal analog--something that can haul lots of gear over rough terrain and interact with personnel naturally, in a way that is intuitive to the soldiers and Marines around it. In addition to its “eyes,” DARPA wants to give it auditory sensors that can respond to simple voice commands like “come” or “stay.” And ongoing tests aim to refine the vision system so it can distinguish between humans and learn to track specific individuals.

Wasteland Weekend 2012

Imagine living in the world of Mad Max for just one day. At Wasteland Weekend 2012 you can!

The Mad Max movies have given us some of the best post apocalyptic stories around. With notable places like "The Thunderdome" and "Barter Town", its hard to forget these films. Mel Gibson effectively launched his career with Mad Max. Its funny how he became mad himself, ah Hollywood.

Here are the Wikipedia entries for those not familiar.
Mad Max
The Road Warrior (One of the best movies ever IMHO.)
Mad Max beyond Thunderdome

If a person were to dress up and play "adventure" in the desert than this would be the way to go.

LW-15 Polymer Lower Review

Looking for a polymer AR-15 lower? Look no further. I said stop looking. Never mind....I'll be in the car.

I bought one of these New Frontier Armory brand AR-15 polymer lowers for $99.00. You just can't beat it for the price and quality. Below are my thoughts and opinions on this product. You know what they say about opinions? I don't remember but I think it was probably something witty.

INITIAL THOUGHTS.

I found the quality to be on par with my other lower. It is aluminum and made by Aero Precision. Retail was $199.00. Even though almost all the parts on the LW-15 are polymer, I never thought they would break or fail to work correctly. The safety is reversible and did feel a touch springy and not quite as crisp as on the aluminum lower. No big deal.

Its made of polymer? Polymer? Isn't that a fancy word for plastic? How can this be? Glock has used polymers in their products for 25 years and is one of the most successful handgun manufacturers on the market. Polymer is durable, will not rust and will generally make your weapon lighter. That is a good thing.

The LW-15 mates to an upper VERY snug. The first time you use it you may not think it will even fit. It will, it is just made to fit tight. Tight, not loose like a "hotdog down a hallway". Moving on....

The trigger pull feels a little different since its not metal. It breaks crisp and has no play to it.

The stock is your typical six position collapsible. If you only had five positions your friends would all laugh at you anyway.

SHOOTING IMPRESSIONS.

I tried the LW-15 with a custom 5.56/.223 16" 1x7 upper and also with a CMMG drop in .22lr conversion on that same upper.

Every time I pulled the trigger it went "bang". Wolf steel cased .223 and some "no name" brass cased .223 reloads all worked flawless. I was very satisfied since I tend to shoot the cheapest and dirtiest .223 ammo I can find. Believe me, if I could afford to shoot diamond tipped bullets dipped in 24k gold I would.

Moving on to the .22lr kit. I tried some Aguila SSS Sniper Subsonic 60 grain lead round nose, Aguila Super Maximum 1750 fps 30 grain plated lead round nose, Federal "Wal Mart" specials, Blazer lead round nose and some assorted others. All worked great. This lower works with any and all ammo that my aluminum lower works with.

JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS.

If you want to buy a inexpensive and reliable lower than this is a great choice. If you are the name brand guy who only buys Daniel Defense $349.00 lowers than you may not care about this product.

Just remember that a higher price does not always equal higher quality.

The world is supposed to end this year, so why am I still at work?

This show is about those people who prepare for what life would be like without cell phones, Starbucks and pizza delivery. Listen, I need my pepperoni pizza!

Whether the show will make survivalists look smart or like insane rednecks isn't clear.
(Probably like rednecks) I really hope they do have some practical tips and information other than "you need 20,000 rounds of ammo!"

Series premiere: Tuesday Feb 7th at 9pm on National Geographic.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Smart bullets

Smart bullets. I believe this scene from the "Fifth Element" shows what the engineers are "shooting" for. (get it, get it? awwww) Where can I pre-order one and can I get the ice blaster accessory too?

The Sandia National Labs engineers have developed and patented a new breed of self-guided bullet that can navigate its way to a laser-designated target at ranges of more than a mile.

Their bullet works much like a precision guided aerial bomb might function. An optical sensor in the nose of the bullet detects a laser beam painted on a target and sends that information to a guidance and control system also packed on board. An eight-bit CPU commands electromagnetic actuators to adjust tiny fins that deploy from the round immediately after it exits the muzzle.

From there, the on-board electronics aerodynamically guide the bullet home to its target, allowing the shooter to adjust a round’s trajectory in flight to correct on a long shot or to stay with a moving target.

Meet the .950 JDJ Rifle

Overkill, overkill and overkill. I'll take two and the next plane ticket to Jurassic Park.

Only 12 people have ever shot the .950 JDJ rifle. Produced by SSK Industries, only 3 were ever made this was the first and the lightest weighing in at 50 lbs.

It shoots a 2400 grain bullet! For comparison, the standard 5.56 projectile used by an AR15 is a 55 grain bullet. By using my amazing math skills, I have determined that one .950 is equal to about 44 5.56 bullets.
